Bollywood's blue-eyed girl Aishwarya Rai celebrates her 35th birthday on Saturday.

The actress who continues to be at the helm of Bollywood is considered one of the most bankable stars in the film industry.

Aishwarya, now married to actor Abhishek Bachchan, was born in Mangalore to Krishnaraj Rai, a marine biologist, and Vrinda Rai, a writer.

After winning the Miss World title in 1994, Aishwarya took to acting in 1997 with a Tamil film Iruvar opposite southern superstar Mohanlal. She made her Bollywood debut in the same year opposite Bobby Deol in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya.

Why do we say this? Mainly two events that happened recently.

One Kats danced away like there was no tomorrow in Shahrukh Khan's Temptation Reloaded event. Now everybody knows that Salman's relations with Shahrukh are hostile. They had almost come to blows on July 16, Katrina's birthday bash. So by participating in a Shahrukh show, Katrina has declared her 'independence' from Salman's whimsical ways. It is also reported that she has signed a Yash Raj film with King Khan.

Secondly, Kats has refused to attend Salman's new year bash. All these years she had been religiously there, but she has said no this time.

The reasons could be that Katrina is miffed with Salman for the fight he had had with Shahrukh. Katrina had invited SRK to her July 16 bash. She had wanted to talk about the forthcoming Yash Raj film with the King Khan. but Salman had maliciously spoiled everything.

This is the general impression.

Another cause for the seeming Katrina-Salman split could be that Salman is pushing for a early marriage. Katrina wants to act for a few more years. Marriage can wait, she thinks. By dancing at Shahrukh's show and by refusing to attend Salman's new years party, Katrina is making her position clear. "Wait or I am sorry."

On being compared to Smita Patil
Honestly, I wasn’t a fan of Smita Patil. I liked what she did and I thought she had this mysterious air about her. She was very earthy. She was definitely different from say Hema Malini or Rekha, but at that time I was at an age when I couldn’t appreciate her work. But now understand her work and see what she’s done, I think she was a fantastic actress. Films like Arth and Mandi… she was pretty ahead of her time.

Her fav actresses
I was completely in awe of Rekha . She’s so beautiful. At one point, Hema Malini was my dream girl. I thought she was beautiful too. But I think it’s Shabana and Smita now that I’ve seen their body of work. They are really something else.

On managing family and films
Not really. I’m not that busy at the moment. I’m, not like the number one actress in the Bollywood so its not like I’m, completely booked all the time. It’s not difficult at all, because at least I’m not in a 9-to-5 job. I don’t have a boss so I don’t have to report in every morning. I choose my projects and I manage my time. I can prioritise my work and I’m managing it pretty well.

On her long disappearance
I didn’t want to be an actress at that point . I was happy doing my ad films and print work but then Hazaaron and Kal happened. I think too much was being asked out of me and I was slightly confused. I just felt like I couldn’t manage all that. I couldn’t keep up with it. It was all very personal. It was my inability to understand the business of cinema.

On the kind of films she wants to do
I am not much of a planner. I would want to do films with good directors. I would want to do films where I am an integral part of the film. It doesn’t matter whether it’s big or small or if it’s a big banner. I would love to work with people lie Sriram Raghavan, Ashutosh Gowariker and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, for whom creativity really matters.

On being called a serious actress
I don’t know where that comes from. Thinking actress… probably but I’m just two films old. To try and compartmentalise me already, would be a little too harsh. I do look like Smita Patil and that’s a very big compliment for me, but I just need some more experience. I too can dance and do all of that.

They were in for a surprise! Urmila flatly refused to do the role saying it was not meaty enough. Way to go, Urmi! You have been on top in Bollywood with lead roles and your refusal to do sidey roles is perfectly right. It would tarnish your image as an A grade actress.

Even if you were to to marry and leave Bollywood, going out in style would be the right thing to do instead of going down the rut with sidey roles in films after films.

Why do Khans get violent at times? Salman does it often. Now Saif Ali Khan has joined the party.

He was shooting for a film in Punjab, when some newsmen tried to click photos of the Nawab. Phut! The man blew his fuse and ordered his security men to beat up the film journos!

The lensmen who got a hiding promptly filed a police complaint. The local cops suggested to the two parties to settle the matter before it reached the courts. It is rumoured the 'injured' party (the two photo-journos) got a lot of dough from Kareena's beau and the matter has subsided.

Wonder why Bollywood guys'n'gals get violent at times? Think they are above the law?

We have already written about the forthcoming Hrithik - Barabara Mori flick 'Kite'. Well, the Greek God is doing more than looking after Barbara's kid on the sets. He is putting on his sensual best for the film. All you girls who dream of Hrithik at night, be ready to swoon when you watch Kite. The guy has put on his 'sex' engine in the fifth gear!

Don't take my word for it. A source close to the film unit says, “The two sizzle together. This is Hrithik’s most sensuous film to date. The accent here is not only on his dancing but on his ability to generate sensuality which has so far remained largely under wraps, the chemistry with Aishwarya Rai in ‘Dhoom 2′ notwithstanding. In ‘Kites’, Basu has shot another more sensuous side of Hrithik.”

Of course, all this might be publicity talk. But when folks like Hrithik and Barbara get together on screen, sparks are bound to fly!

It's sure going to be interesting to see our sensuous star Lara Dutta on screen in her upcoming film BLUE. After all Lara was given the Hollywood touch by the same make–up artist who was behind Keira Knightley's look in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. Lara says, ''The film required a make up artist who could handle make up for under water sequences as well as special effects for the action sequences and give the character a 'glamorous beach babe' look, that was also very natural looking.

Nikoletta Skarlatos, who has worked on TRANSFORMERS as well as PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, came very highly recommended by the International action team. She and Clarabelle Saldhana have put the whole look together for make–up and hair. They have done an amazing job and I am extremely thrilled with the results''. Is it possible for the ex–Miss Universe to look even more radiant than she does already? We'll just have to wait and watch to find out.

For all you folks who were missing Urmila Matondkar, here is good news. This October two of her flicks will release. The films are KARZZZZ and EMI which arrive on 17th October and 29th October respectively.

In Karzzzz she plays Simi Grewal's role (in the old Rishi Kapoor film). One assumes Himesh Reshammiya will be the modern Rishi Kapoor. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Anyway, it will be nice to see Urmila again. Hope her films click at the box-office. Some mean folks have started saying she has grown older. Ki woh buddhi ho gayi hai!

Bollywood on strike: The film workers deserve more

Today the film workers (Federation of Western India Cine Employees - FWICE)and the producers' guild will meet and talk. Hopefully things will be sorted out and the paralysed Bollywood will start humming again.

What is the basic issue? The film workers say that the producers hire people outside their unions at a lower rate despite the fact that the agreement is that they can hire workers only from the unions. The producers say the workers' body is not co-operating with them so they hire people from outside.

The film workers seem to be right. Unions are good. They prevent producers from using technicians at meagre wages. The union ensures that they good money. After all this is not the heartless capitalism of the 19th century we live in. The producers make a fortune. The workers should get more.

No wonder Bollywood biggies like Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan are supporting the workers. Bollywood makes a lot of money. It is high time the lowliest worker gets a better deal.

Some wicked people say I don't have the brains for anything else except body building and flexing them while I get filmed; these being my films. What rubbish! I do a lot other things too. I line-maro beautiful women. I seduce them first and then I slap them around. People say I am a MCP. Rubbish! You got to slap women when they don't behave, isn't it? What is all that male-chauvinistic-pig stuff about that?

I love my women. In fact I love them even after they get married, to some else. Take the case of Aishwarya Rai. I still love her and so naturally I keep reminiscing about her. How I made @&# with her and how many times. Katrina does not like that. But she does not say anything now after I slapped her. Nothing wrong in not forgetting your lady loves, eh? That is true love. katrina samajti nahin hai.

I love Katrina too. That is why I don't want her to act with that cheap guy, Shahrukh Khan. The cheek of the girl! She wanted to act with Shahrukh in a Yash Raj film! I will not allow that.

So I slyly invited that %$#@! to the birthday party of Katrina and picked a fight with him. I taunted him. I am quite a bully, you know. That !@#%$ was not getting provoked so I taunted him more, till he got angry. Somebody stopped me otherwise I would have loved to beat him up.

After all I am the real Khan. Two nights later, I did go up to his house and yelled at him to come out of the house. Some presswallahs say I abused his wife and kids too. Bullshit! I only abused that %$#@!.

I am not a bad guy. Do you read the columns that my lackeys write? You will know that I have a big heart and help out people. I am a good boy.

Anyway why am wasting my time in blabbering all this in my mind? I should go to the gym and work out some more. It is a bad world and one has to be strong. I have to build my biceps and triceps some more. My producers say that is the reason why I am in Bollywood.
